What’s going on?
Yesterday, our firm — along with many other law firms across North Carolina — received a flood of calls from current and former clients who were alarmed by a suspicious text message. The message claimed to be from the North Carolina DMV and warned that the recipient’s license was about to be suspended. It then requested personal information.
These text messages are fraudulent. They are phishing attempts designed to steal your personal information. Do not respond. This is NOT a legitimate communication from the DMV. Screenshots from some of these fraudulent messages have been included below.
If the North Carolina DMV needs to contact you regarding your license status, they will do so by mail, using a letter sent via the United States Postal Service to the address listed on your driver’s license.
